IBM PC's & clones

Before the IBM PC in the personal/home computers industry there was absolutely no standard on computer hard- or software and new standards were coming out almost every month. Of course before a standard can emerge a lot of candidates must have tried to become the standard and the industry must learn from its mistakes.
When IBM introduced its IBM PC two things made it a standard. First home computers before it had too much of a games background and reputation to be introduced in serious business and IBM finally made it a suitable thing to do to buy a personal computer (of course the IBM PC was also just a home computer). Second IBM made the decision to use only standard parts with as a result that everybody could build a clone of the machine.
A lot of history made it possible that IBM now no longer defines the standard. But everybody can now produce a computer that is 100% compatible with what is meant with a PC.
IBM, I want to thank you very much for setting a the (initial) standard and I mean it.
